VASSE FELIX CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2011 $35
HE SAID: Admittedly this had every chance to shine – a juicy big cut of roast beef, in fact – but it was a hit from the first sip with everyone at the table. Medium bodied, good concentration, black fruit and currants, a bit of leafy complexity, and fine tannins that will ensure this fellow ages gracefully. For me, this is quintessential Margaret River cabernet, and I wish I had a few more bottles lying around to enjoy over the next decade or so … alas, I don’t.
SHE SAID: A delicious drop from Margaret River’s first vineyard and winery, established in 1967. Vasse Felix released its first cabernet in 1972 and the 2011 vintage was the fortieth consecutive cabernet made under the label that now sets the benchmark for premium cabernet. It’s a fruit-driven wine with great balance and oh-so-easy to drink. In 2011 the breakdown had a little more cabernet than usual - 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Malbec, and 0.5% each Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.
