It’s dry July, which means Hunter Valley Wine & Food Month is over for another year but we’re looking forward to next year’s already. In winter, we love sprawling beside open fires, drinking red wine and tucking into rib-sticking comfort food – and that’s what Wine & Food Month is all about.
The 2015 highlights for us included the Food Fight – where some of the Hunter’s best chefs had a cook-off against the finest from the Southern Highlands. It was a close call but the Hunter Valley won the day. My favourite dish was Muse owner/chef Troy Rhoades-Brown’s Petuna ocean trout with fennel, apple, verjuice, an oyster emulsion and wasabi yoghurt. Excellent dish – and the First Creek 2013 Winemakers Reserve Semillon was a first-rate match.
RA’s sister, Cathy, comes up each year for the Cork & Fork Cup at The Vintage Golf Club. It’s a four-person Ambrose (whatever the hell that means – can you tell I’m not a golfer?) with food and wine tastings at every hole. As you can imagine, it ends up being a pretty long golf game and Cathy apparently had a shocker of a game this year so she’s decided a little less sipping and more snacking might be in order next year.
