Wine review: Zema Estate

ZEMA ESTATE CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2012, $25

HE SAID: A confession: we like the Zema crowd, they're good fun. And we like their wines too. I even gave my Dad a Zema one year to take to Christmas with the other side of the family, and he puffed his chest out with pride when it was the go-to wine for everyone at the table. True story. Anyway, this is from a good Coonawarra vintage and it's typical Zema. Loads of flavour, lovely balance, a sense of elegance, but maybe a bit grippy on the finish. All in all not my favourite Zema, but a good wine.

SHE SAID: Rick and Nick Zema really hit it off when we visited the Coonawarra region a few years ago, trading cricket war stories of their glory days on the pitch while indulging in a few Coonawarra cabernets. And damned fine cabernets they are too, all estate grown and hand-pruned. I disagree with RA on the 2012 as I thought it was perfectly balanced and enjoyed every drop. No surprise there, we agree to disagree all the time!
